Web Design, CSS and Wordtracker
This conversation is continued from this page...easy ways to make money with a web site
Rick: i sent you an email
George: ok just check
George: by the way since you gave me office 2003 i've started using outlook and its really good
Rick: yeah it's nice
George: wow so you just created a web page
Rick: yeah
George: why does it take a week
Rick: ?
George: to get to the top of a se list
Rick: search engines spider the web continuously - and they need to see that pages are permanent i.e. worth indexing
George: oh ok i see
George: lets say i was gonna make a web site
Rick: it varies though I wrote a page targeting the phrase "Cars to tow behind motorhomes" and I was #1 within 2 days
George: really
Rick: yeah http://www.motorhomesdirect.co.uk/cars-to-tow-behind-motorhome.htm
Rick: get loads of enquiries about the A-frames
Rick: and I get about £10 for each sale
George: cool
George: how long did that page take to make
Rick: they sell smart cars too - haven't sold 1 yet though
Rick: that would be about £300 for me!
George: cool
Rick: another example, search for "learning to fly a microlight in the french alps"
George: if i bought one of those domains that cost 4 pounds a month and gave 500mb and a 5000mb monthly usage from 123-reg for instance the starter plus - http://www.123-reg.co.uk/host.shtml what would happen if i tried to put more than 500mb on
Rick: not sure, but would that really happen?? 500Mb is loads!!
George: yeah i was just curious really
George: that price says it excludes vat, how much is vat
Rick: 17.5% btw most of my pages are about 10kb
George: oh ok but i wanted to have downloads on it
Rick: so 100 pages is 1Mb and 50,000 pages would be 500Mb
George: is it illegal to link to other sites for the files they host
Rick: you are supposed to ask them first - but as it is an advantage for them, everyone will say yes
Rick: incoming links are a great way to boost your web popularity
George: ok cool
George: how much is £3.99 including vat
Rick: £4.69
George: so that's£56.28 a year
George: what kind of value is that
Rick: what do you mean?
George: well is that expensive for that kind of package
Rick: you could try some stuff out on your ISPs free space first - who is your ISP?
George: Freeserve, i don't think its very good
Rick: that's where I did my first site
George: is it good
Rick: it's alright - Search engines don't like free space as much as proper hosting, but it'll get you started - not sure if google.com/adsense will like it though
George: SE?
Rick: have a look at wanadoo.co.uk/help/id/6090.htm it's free!
Rick: SE= search engines
George: oh o
George: OK
George: what was your first site about
Rick: my band
Rick: active loop zone
George: cool
George: with Wanadoo's free thing do you have to use their sitebuilder
Rick: no you can just get the FTP details and stick them into dreamweaver and do what you want
George: ok
George: do you think that that deal from 123-reg is good or not
Rick: if you are only doing one site then yes
Rick: just noticed my album is on amazon amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000004AXF/103-6578429-5863045?v=glance&vi=samples
George: what about if you were doing 2 or 3 web sites
Rick: i dunno, do the maths!!
George: how would you move a web site from one service provider to another
George: (and what do you mean your album)
Rick: just ftp it to the new one - it's just copying files from one computer to another using FTP as I say not rocket science!!
George: is there anyway you could you keep the web address but move provider or would you have to get a new web address
Rick: No not with a free one, but you could just buy a domain name and then forward it to wherever you like.........
Rick: i have a few like that..eg
Rick: www.ukinsuranceonline.co.uk forwards to www.uk-insurance-online.com
George: what do you mean, when you register with 123-reg and make a web site how would you move it to another provider
George: how would you get it to forward to it
Rick: in this case you wouldn't host it with them you would register something like georgeday.co.uk/ and then just choose the web forwarding option on the 123-control panel thing and forward it to somewhere like myspace.wanadoo.co.uk/georgeday or whatever your free space is called
Rick: look here 123-reg.co.uk/register.shtml
George: OK
George: so you buy a web address but no space on it and then you just forward it to a free web space
Rick: yeah - blogs are good too - look at http://www.blogger.com/start
Rick: dunno much about then though
George: by the way how come you get unlimited webb space
Rick: coz i pay for it!
George: what do you mean, so when you have more things do u pay more
Rick: not really, but i pay an annual charge for the server and fee for each site too, but I can do what I want then, most sites are around 10Mb max, you have to write sites for people on 56k dial up
Rick: I have nothing more than pictures and words to give away
Rick: shouldn't you be in bed??
George: well my mum knows I am up and I am not at school so.........
Rick: ok
Rick: maybe blogging might be the way forward for you
George: was exactly is blogging
Rick: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blogging
Rick: wikipedia is fantastic btw
George: ok ill add it to favourites
Rick: i love all that open source stuff
George: how much space do you think i need for a web site on a series of games
Rick: sod all - if it's just text and pictures etc - 1Mb?
George: lol so not much
Rick: no - unless you have some wicked game you have written that you want to give away
George: no but that would be cool
Rick: a great thing to do would be to have something that people want that you can give away which makes your web site 'sticky' (i.e. people want to come back to it)
George: what do mean
Rick: example 123promotion.co.uk/promotion/tools/website-promotion-tools.html
George: ok i see
Rick: in fact you may find this useful 123promotion.co.uk/seo/articles/buildgreatwebsite.html
Rick: i use this often 123promotion.co.uk/tools/google-recently-spidered.php
George: with getting high in a SE if the title & Tags were called 'The Worms 4 Mayhem Web site and someone searched for 'Worms 4 mayhem web site would that get quite high
Rick: try it in wordtracker - you are looking for a KEI>10 ideally
George: ok
Rick: some phrases you don't expect work well
Rick: i was #1 in google for ages with "wedding loans" and "american auto finance"
George: really
Rick: yeah wordtracker is great for finding niche key phrases
George: have you bought wordtracker
Rick: i have, but the free trial is good enough
George: what's the difference
Rick: if you use it you will see - basically you are limited to 30 phrases and you only get to do the competition search (stage 3) with altavista - whereas with the real version you can use msn search and google, but for free it gives you a good idea about how to look for niche keyphrases
Rick: it's web based - it's a service rather than a prog
George: oh ok i see what u mean
Rick: have a play with it - it's a learning curve, george I'm going to have to go to bed - enjoyed the chat but i need to go .. laters
George: speak to you soon - bye
Rick: (Y)
here's the sample that I used with the phrase "Hello George, this is in an H1 tag"
