Ferries from Dover to DunkerqueI have been backwards and forwards over the English Channel more times than I can remember. In the olden days before I knew better I would use SeaFrance, but one day I turned up late and they tried to charge a huge surcharge which I wasn’t happy with. Another time I turned up at Calais desperate to get back to England and they quoted me something like 330€ as I hadn’t booked in advance.  Later I discovered Speedferries who I loved, but sadly went bust due to being forced out by the ‘giants of the channel’. So who does that leave? Well P&O usually get rated well, but always seem expensive. So then there is my favourite, Norfolkline who operate ferries from Dover to Dunkerque. I have always found them to be superb, if you turn up late they just book you on the next ferry, if you turn up early they will let you go on the ferry before.

In April 2010 the volcanic ash disruption meant that my parents were stuck in the French Alps and couldn’t get back to England. I was happy to come to their rescue, but everyone I spoke to said “you’ll never get a ferry it’s chaos at Dover”. Well the truth was that it was chaos at Calais rather than Dover. P&O and SeaFrance were hiking up their prices as their service became indispensable. For me though I just thought, “that’s OK, Norfolkline do ferries from Dover to Dunkerque, I’ll use them”. It was predictably no problem at all to go and get them and bring them back to England.

So there you go, you have a choice of ferries across the channel, but I’d say forget Calais, look at ferries from Dover to Dunkerque by Norfolkline.

motorhoming in the French AlpsHere is a nice little spot I found to stop in the ski resort of Serre Chevalier. This car park is between St Chaffrey and Briançon and I have been here for 3 days and no one has said a word.Motorhoming in The French Alps is always a nice thing to do as you can find superb places to wild camp and there is always fantastic scenery to see,

It is pretty quiet here as the skiing stopped last Saturday, so everyone is having a very chilled ‘interseason’ as they call it. There are very few bars open at the moment and even (open) restaurants are few and far between.  Having said that, at the moment I am only 4km from Briançon, which although is technically part of the Serre Chevalier ski resort, does continue to function as a proper town in it’s own right. Wild camping isn’t your only option when motorhoming in The French Alps, there are loads of really good campsites, some open all year round too.

]]> I'm just making a new site called Port Isaac Cottages. I'm doing it for free for my friend Adam Godfrey who I know from Alpe d'Huez in The French Alps. I agreed to do this in return for getting to borrow his lovely holiday cottage from time to time when I am in the UK. The holiday cottage is called Llanbrydn which is in a tiny village called Trelights in Cornwall. It is very near the quite famous Port Issac where Poldark and Doc Martin have been fimed. In fact I believe that the next TV series of Doc Martin begins filming this May.

So why am I making this post here? Well, this is to demonstrate how to get a site indexed in Google very quickly. This is what I have done so far:

  • did some keyword research using the Google External Keyword Research Tool and came up with the phrase 'port isaac cottages' to try and target
  • registered www.portisaaccottages.com with Go Daddy
  • Set up some CPanel hosting (in the UK)
  • installed a Wordpress blog using Fantastico (this comes with most CPanel hosting)
  • added the Semiologic Pro theme to the blog
  • OCR'd the leaflet Adam gave me and scanned the photos
  • Added the content to 'pages' (rather than 'posts') in the Wordpress blog
  • Made a blog post called 'Port Isaac Cottages'
  • Grabbed the RSS and pinged it at Pingomatic
  • Installed a plugin to create a XML Google Sitemap
  • verified and added the site and site map using Google Webmaster Tools
  • Added Google Analytics
  • Dugg the blog post and pinged the RSS feeds from Digg
  • Social Bookmarked the post using Del.icio.us and pinged the RSS feed from that
  • Made this blog post linking to the new site with the anchor text Port Isaac Cottages

I'll have a rest now and see what happens.

A month or so ago, I was actually giving myself a personal challenge to get a top 10 Google listing for a certain phrase, when I thought it would be fun to report my findings ‘live’, by doing a Camtasia video and then putting it out live at the same time (through Traffic Geyser of course). I did 3 videos all based on the phrase ‘traffic geyser review’. These were over a 48 hour period. Bear in mind that I wasn’t intending on doing this to get rankings for this phrase, just reporting my findings as I went along.

My results are awesome, see my screenshot

Traffic Geyser Review Details

I now occupy 80% of the Google top 10 for ‘traffic geyser review’. I am even #2 in Google for ‘Traffic Geyser’!

Of course I have used this to generate some revenue by using the the ‘bottom third’ to display the URL www.1dollaronly.com which is a GoDaddy domain name redirecting to my affiliate linkJ. This is a technique suggested in the excellent video tutorials that come with Traffic Geyser.

My most recent success has been to do with a Calendar that I have made for my friend’s bar in The French Alps. The calendar features all the staff and friends of the bar in naked (but tastefully obscured) shots.

I decided to make a very short video to promote the calendar and now the video is #1 in Google for the phrase ‘2008 calendar nude’, see the screenshot

Probably my greatest result so far was when I first got Traffic Geyser, I made a video from some stills of a ‘drag’ competition we hold every January at La Grotte, Serre Chevalier, the bar featured above. I used the slideshow creator in Traffic Geyser and 3mins of accordion music from the ‘Royalty Free’ package that also come with Traffic Geyser.

This video on Youtube alone has had 67,805 views to date!

This was made using some of my images and everything else that came with Traffic Geyser.

I am now a ‘gold’ user, but this was made when I was just a ‘silver’ member.

As requested, here is a photo of me doing what I like best, chilling out with my caravan and a beer in the South of France!
