It is very important to make sure you have a pretty comprehensive pinglist, set up in your blog. To do this I normally Google 'wordpress ping list yyyy' where yyyy is the year. So in this case it was 'wordpress ping list 2009' which brought me to http://www.prelovac.com/vladimir/wordpress-ping-list

To enable the permalink structure to be changed in the current version of Wordpress and Semiologic Pro, the privacy settings must first be changed.
Go to settings>privacy settings and then check the box that says "I would like my blog to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Sphere, Technorati) and archivers". I don't understand why this should ever be unchecked, so make sure it isn't!

For a year or two now I have been giving away information about how to get number one in Google, but when I searched for that phrase I was horrified to see that I was on the second page of Google! This isn't a particularly good ad for me, but there again I am up against 246,000,000 results so competition is somewhat stiff!
