Here is the story of how I came to write this book. If you want to buy this Kindle book, please try and leave a review on Amazon. Use this link to buy The Volcano Book for Children, Mums, Dads and Teachers.
Back in April 2013 idea that she publish a Kindle book. It was called the Brompton Folding Bike Guide and it was quite short. Didn’t really know what I was doing when I wrote this book, if I did I wouldn’t have made it so short. The reason being is that if you sell a Kindle book for less than $2.99 then you can only take 30% commission. If you sell a Kindle book for $2.99 or more you can take 70% commission. As the first book I wrote and it came out as the equivalent of 18 pages I decided I’d better sell it for the lowest price possible which is just $.99. This means that the commission I get is only about $.30 per book. I keep thinking of ways to make it longer so that I can justify charging $2.99 which means I could get two dollars commission on each book, but at the moment it just seems daft to try and pad it out when I’ve kind of made all the valid points in the first book. It’s not so much that it’s a inadequate book it’s just more of the guide.
So can my second book I decided to tackle a subject that would be more universally search for and not in such a narrow niche. I decided on volcanoes because my daughter kept asking me questions about volcanoes and I didn’t always know the answer. The the sort of bloke I am I had to go off and research all these things so I thought it would be only fair to other parents to let them in on my knowledge and offer a easy to understand and concise book about volcanoes. I was going to call the book the volcano book for children, but then I realise that parents might like it as well. There is nothing worse than seeming a bit thick in front of your own children so it’s pretty good to get clued up on that subject. Then I started thinking what about teachers and schools? If they need to know about volcanoes quickly they don’t really want to go in research how the detailed geology and volcanology books and then boil it down into understandable facts. This is where the title came from.
Obtaining the images for this book would have been very difficult if I’d decided to try and use original photographs that belong to me or to buy the royalties photographs that other people have taken. For this reason I decided to stick to using images that are either public domain or have a Creative Commons license. Images that are in the public domain tend to be very old images or ones that have been taken by the government owned body. A good example of this is NASA you do not have any copyright on any of their images and they are completely in the public domain. This means that if you want to use a photograph that has been taken from the space shuttle or any other sort of spaceship then you can. This was great for some of the photographs are very large volcanoes that can only really be seen properly from space, such as the enormous Lake Toba volcano that was the biggest eruption in the planet’s history. With Creative Commons images all you usually have to do is to attribute the owner of the photograph. What I decided to do was to put a section in the back of the book called ‘images used in this book’. In this section I listed all the images and gave the correct attribution and even mention what kind of Creative Commons license was used. So far I have had 11 reviews on Amazon all of which have been very positive. In fact out of these 11 reviews 10 of them are five-star reviews and just one is four-star.
To gain popularity of the book very quickly I took advantage of some strategies that use the KDP Select promotion system. This is where you are allowed to give your book away for five days in the first 90 days. So far I’ve only used my first two days but I got a very good response with over 250 downloads and the 11 reviews that I mentioned earlier.
I’m now waiting to see what Author Rank I’m going to be awarded by Amazon for this initial promotion. Hopefully if I can get it to the top of a category that is something to do with earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis or nature I should have a good chance of selling quite a few copies.
If you like to get in touch with me please do so and I can detail some of the strategies are used to produce my Kindle book and to promote and market it afterwards. Of course if you want to go ahead and buy it please do. If you don’t want to buy it and want to get it for free, then I’ll be happy to tell you when you can do this. If you do get hold of it in any way shape or form please do leave a review on Amazon, it really does make a difference.
