I've been merrily getting people to use Rick Butt's book, 'Monetize Your Blog', when all of a sudden someone asked me "'What is a blog?".

A blog is essentially a web log. This used to be for teenage agirls to write about everything they did on a daily basis with no real use.  These days blogs look like web sites, for example this is a blog, but more interestingly some of my sites like UK Insurance Online which sells mortgage protection insurance is also a blog.

A blog is a web site that anyone can create and publish to easily without using any software and in many circumstances without spending any money.  Two of the most popular blog platforms are Blogger and Wordpress which are both free. Of course in both of these circumstances it is possible to earn money from them too.  The bottom line is that search engines love fresh unique content and in most cases that is what blogs provide.
