Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF) Definition

by Rick Lomas on July 31, 2006

I just realized that in my last blog entry, I casually mentioned ORIF…If you have had ORIF you will know what it is, if not here is the definition:

Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF) is a medical procedure. Open reduction refers to open surgery to set bones, as is necessary for some fractures. Internal fixation refers to fixation of screws and/or plates to enable or facilitate healing. Rigid fixation prevents micromotion across lines of fracture to enable healing and prevent infection. Some surgeons use titanium bone plates and screws to rigidly fix fractures.

Not sure what my metalwork was made of, because you never get to see it these days because the hospitals are worried about people injuring themselves and then blaming the  hopital for letting the patient take their hardware home!
